Consider the differences between traditional and digital businesses
Traditional businesses are facing a different set of circumstances than businesses born in the digital era. Knowing those differences can be a powerful lever in carrying out your business. They each have specific needs and unique capabilities. By considering the differences, you can build a more qualitative, and thus more effective, business relationship!
New and traditional businesses: how context makes a difference
It seems that digital companies are far ahead of those who blazed the trail before them. By nature, their business is built around technological and digital tools. Their communications, processes and culture are permeated with digital technology. At the same time, traditional businesses are based on paper and need to wean off of it—or partially at least.
One is built on new digital foundations while the other has to deal with its legacy. But that legacy is not always a burden. Traditional businesses have been able resist going digital so far because they already have processes, tools, products and services that work well. They need to strike the right balance in their digital transformation to remain competitive.
As an analogy, think about buying a house. If you buy a new one, it may be easier than renovating an old one. It’s easier to start fresh and build from the foundation up. Yet that’s not always possible and a number of factors may point to keeping the foundation and improving on the existing house. That’s exactly the case for traditional businesses: some have spent years building their reputation and their processes. Their employees are trained, and they have an established customer database and proven products and services. They can’t change everything all at once; that could be counterproductive. Therefore, they have to meet the challenges of the digital world and adapt in their own way.
